After just a week at their new home at 201 N. Hogan St., Suite 100, the artists of Southlight Gallery have made a new home.

The 29 member artists represented at the gallery moved from 6 E. Bay St., where the gallery was located on the second floor of the Dyal-Upchurch Building. The new gallery space is street-level along Hogan Street, between Adams and Monroe streets, which givs the gallery and the art more visibility.

“An art gallery that sells art needs a storefront,” said Pam Zambetti, director of marketing and artist-in-residence.

Southlight was established in October 2009 in a space at The Jacksonville Bank Building as one of Downtown’s original “Off the Grid” galleries.

The program, a partnership between the Cultural Council of Greater Jacksonville and Downtown Vision Inc., matched artists with property owners who were willing to lease space at below-market rate on a month-to-month basis. That meant an artist might have to find new gallery space on fairly short notice when a more traditional tenant leased the space.

Zambetti said the new Southlight Gallery has a renewable one-year lease, which allows for better planning of exhibits and events.

The artists at Southlight are planning a “grand reopening” and a fourth anniversary celebration Nov. 6 in conjunction with First Wednesday Art Walk.

“It will be a real opportunity to showcase our new space,” said Zambetti.

Southlight Gallery is open 11 a.m.-3 p.m. Tuesday-Friday and by appointment. For more information on the artists and the gallery, visit southlightgallery.com.
