As part of National Crime Victims’ Rights Week April 6-12, the city presented its annual awards luncheon Tuesday to recognize people whose lives have been touched by crime.
Lucia McBath and Ron Davis were awarded the 2014 Courageous Victim Award. Their son, Jordan Davis, was killed in November at a Southside convenience store. Since then, the couple has been outspoken advocates for changing laws regarding the use of lethal force.
The Outstanding Victim Advocate Award was presented to Carl Harms, a survivor of attempted murder who works with victims at Compassionate Families.
Assistant State Attorney Theresa Simak was named Judicial Victim Advocate for her work as division chief assigned to the Special Assault Division and former division chief of the Domestic Battery Unit.
Officer Nicolas Eddy is the 2014 Law Enforcement Victim Advocate. A seven-year veteran of the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office, Eddy has educated more than 600 public schools students, parents and teachers about bullying.
Action News anchor Paige Kelton received this year’s Media Award for her work on behalf of the University of Florida First Coast Child Protective team.
