It was about putting smiles on people’s faces. Especially the children.

Close to 300 people, including families were up bright and early Thursday morning to take part in a Christmas breakfast and celebration provided by the Sulzbacher Center.

The emergency shelter for homeless individuals and families again provided the scene for the gathering, providing a hot holiday meal of traditional breakfast staples.

More than a dozen volunteers helped put on the event, including former Jacksonville Jaguars safety Donovin Darius and his wife. The former player visited with the children and signed autographs throughout the morning.

Adults at the center received a Christmas stocking full of necessities like clothes, razors, shaving cream and soap.

Santa Claus made his way from table to table during breakfast. Afterward children went with him to the facility’s family center to receive a few Christmas presents of clothes, school supplies, a teddy bear and toy.

Throughout the holiday morning, there were smiles.
