The city installed its holiday tree in Hemming Plaza before the December First Wednesday Art Walk. Mayor Alvin Brown ceremoniously lit the tree Dec. 6 during the Holiday at St. James party in the plaza.

Christmas Day was two weeks ago, Epiphany was Monday and the tree still is part of the park's landscape near the Skyway station.

Tonisha Landry-Gaines, director of the Office of Special Events, said the tree was scheduled to be taken down and removed Monday, but predictions of cold weather on Tuesday and Wednesday caused the work to be postponed.

Landry-Gaines said the ornaments and lights will be removed and the tree will be taken down by park maintenance staff and then recycled into mulch.

"We're kind of behind. We're going to make sure everything is down by Thursday," she said.
