Leadership Jacksonville premieres Barr Weaver documentary
Leadership Jacksonville premiered its fifth installment Wednesday of the "Jacksonville Legacy Series," honoring Delores Barr Weaver. The programs highlight honorees' contributions to the community. Produced by Lindsey Films, the program will air on WJCT at 8 p.m. Thursday and will be available at the station's and Leadership Jacksonville's websites.
Atlantic Beach Partners buys Selva Marina property
Atlantic Beach Partners finalized the purchase of 170 acres from the former Selva Marina Country Club for $4.3 million. The country club closed last year after 55 years.
The company will spend about $12 million in improvements, including replacing the golf course with an 18-hole, 6,815-yard championship course designed by Erik Larsen of LarsenGolf in Ponte Vedra Beach.
The new course and surrounding community will be named Atlantic Beach Country Club. Site development will begin this month. Capital Solutions IV, a subsidiary of Itera USA, arranged the financing.
Atlantic Beach Partners is led by Jacksonville-based Wood Development, owned by Rick and Susie Wood. Other members of the partnership are Gary and Leed Silverfield of the Silverfield Group, and William R. "Billy" Howell of the W. R. Howell Co.
The company selected Toll Brothers and Jacksonville-based Riverside Homes as preferred builders for the home sites. Toll Brothers purchased 90 of the sites, with Riverside Home buying 30. Selva Marina members bought 16 last year. Lot prices start in the mid-$190,000s.
FedEx Ground groundbreaking Thursday
FedEx Ground will host a groundbreaking ceremony at 11:30 a.m. Thursday for its new distribution facility on the Westside. Bob Holcombe, FedEx Ground vice president of regional operations, will attend with state and local officials. According to records, it will cost about $19 million to build the 300,000-square-foot facility, scheduled to open in July 2015.
Cushman & Wakefield finalizes Middleburg Crossings sale
The Capital Markets Group of Cushman & Wakefield Florida Inc. announced Tuesday that it had finalized the sale of the Middleburg Crossings Shopping Center to Publix Super Markets. Publix anchors the 64,232-square-foot property that was previously owned by Inland American. The sale price was $8.75 million. Senior Director Karl Johnston, Executive Director Mark Gilbert and Executive Director Adam Feinstein handled the transaction for Inland. The property was 94 percent leased at the time of sale.
UNF, HabiJax partner for New Town home
The University of North Florida and Habitat for Humanity of Jacksonville partnered to build a home in the New Town neighborhood, a historic area being revitalized near Edward Waters College. The ranch-style home is at 1819 W. Fifth St. Students from the university's computing, engineering and construction programs oversaw the project.
Regency Centers, Fuqua Development groundbreaking in Riverside
The Shoppes on Riverside, a 49,870-square-foot shopping center near Downtown, will host a groundbreaking ceremony at 2 p.m. today. The center is a joint venture between Regency Centers Corp. and Fuqua Development, and is expected to bolster the Brooklyn neighborhood. The Fresh Market grocery store and Corner Bakery Café are two announced tenants. Mayor Alvin Brown is scheduled to provide keynote remarks.
JU receives 10-year re-accreditation
Jacksonville University has been re-accredited in good standing for the next decade by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. Administrative officers, faculty, students, trustees and staff were part of the research that required off- and on-site visits and a final review by the association's commission. "This is a demanding exercise that brings important validation of our mission and values, and I'm very proud of the vast increase in quality of the university determined by the experts at the SACS during this multiyear process," said JU President Tim Cost. The decision means the university can continue awarding bachelor's, master's and doctoral degrees.
Children's Commission seeks summer food sites
The Jacksonville Children's Commission and Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services will partner to provide snacks and lunches to children this summer from June 9-Aug. 8. The commission is seeking community partners to help serve the lunches and snacks in low-income neighborhoods. Those who qualify must be located near a school where at least 50 percent of the students are enrolled in the free and reduced lunch program, allow access to all neighborhood children and provide the food free of charge. JTA launches second phase of OTTO
The Jacksonville Transportation Authority began the next phase of its On-Time Transit Operations on Monday to the B7, CT4, F1, L8, P4 and TR3 routes. The program launched in November for enhancements on six of its most heavily traveled routes — AR6, CT1, CT2, K2, L7 and M5. Second-phase enhancements include improved schedules on all six routes, an additional bus on the B7 for midday; an additional bus for the C4 and F1 during the day; and an additional bus on the P4 that improves midday frequency.

Renovated, expanded CareSpot opens Thursday
A larger, renovated CareSpot urgent care center at 5964 Normandy Blvd. will open Thursday. The company moved across the street from its former facility into a 6,180-square-foot clinic, twice the size of most other CareSpot locations. Half the space will be used for urgent care and preventive health services; the other half will be for occupational help. Hours are 7 a.m.-9 p.m. weekdays and 8 a.m.-8-p.m. weekends. The company has locations in Florida, Kansas, Missouri, Tennessee and Texas.

Library to unveil Black History Calendar
Jacksonville Public Library staff and Mayor Alvin Brown will be among those who will unveil the 2014 Black History Calendar at 4 p.m. Thursday at the Main Library. The calendar recognizes important achievements and events in Jacksonville's African-American history. Its unveiling has become an annual event. This year's theme is "Civil Rights in America" and marks 25 years since the calendar entered production.
Meeks to retire from EverBank
EverBank Financial Corp. said in a Securities and Exchange Commission filing Tuesday that Gary Meeks is retiring as vice chairman and chief risk officer, effective April 30.
Meeks has been with Jacksonville-based EverBank and its predecessors since 1989, when he became president and CEO of Alliance Mortgage Co. Alliance eventually formed a bank and changed its name to EverBank in 2004.
Meeks has been vice chairman of EverBank since 2005 and took on the additional role of chief risk officer in 2010.
