When “Over the Edge” began four years ago, it amounted to a group of brave people rappelling down the side of one of Downtown’s signature office towers to raise funds to support North Florida Council Boy Scouts of America.
It has evolved into a festival in the courtyard of EverBank Center complete with food trucks and live music.
North Florida Council Scout Executive Jack Sears said Friday that “Over the Edge” isn’t the biggest fundraiser of the year for the organization.
“But it’s our most visible. It creates the most awareness of the scouting brand,” he said a few minutes after he completed his 30-story, 447-foot descent down the south face of the building.
Sears said this year marked his fourth descent.
“The first time, it was scary. But now I’m used to the equipment and it’s a lot of fun,” he said.
Richard Hardin, food and beverage director at the Omni Hotel, also went down the side of the building Friday. It was his first experience going over the edge.
“I’ve been bungee jumping. That was nothing like this,” he said.
More than 70 people went over the edge of EverBank Center on Thursday and Friday, said Mike Moore, North Florida Council staff adviser and event coordinator. That tally, plus sponsorships, will add up to about $80,000 that will support Boy Scout programs in Northeast Florida, he said.
