The Daily Record staff was recognized for its work at the annual Florida Press Club journalism awards banquet over the weekend.
The newsroom won two first-place honors, a second place and four third-place awards in the under-40,000 daily circulation division.
“As they have for many years, our small, dedicated editorial team works hard to accurately educate our readers on many local issues,” said Daily Record Publisher James Bailey.
Reporter David Chapman won first place in government news writing for a collection of his work that comprised stories on the Downtown Investment Authority, Mayor Alvin Brown’s fund-raising efforts and the battle to restore the historic Armory in Downtown.
Reporter Max Marbut won third place in that category for his stories on the improper placement of an advertising kiosk in City Hall.
Chapman and Editor Marilyn Young received second-place honors in the Lucy Morgan Award for In-Depth Reporting for stories on Brown’s security team’s expenses totaling $310,000 for a year.
Young won first place in general news writing for stories on the case against former Fraternal Order of Police officers Nelson Cuba and Robbie Freitas in the Allied Veterans of the World money-laundering investigation, the retirement of Bishop Rudolph McKissick Sr. from Bethel Baptist Institutional Church and an obituary on Circuit Judge Jean Johnson.
For a special section on the dedication and time capsule at the Duval County Courthouse, graphic designer Codi Gildberg, freelance photographer Bobby King and Young earned a third-place award.
Young also won third-place honors in serious featuring and public safety writing.
“We are proud of our entire Daily Record team. They are all winners who contribute to our success each day.” said Bailey.
