The area of Coastline Drive between Liberty and Market streets affected by the February road collapse along the Northbank will remain closed until necessary replacement or remediation happens.
The determination came Friday after the Florida Department of Transportation completed a review of the area at the city’s request. Chris Hand, Mayor Alvin Brown’s chief of staff, informed City Council members of the update Friday in an email.
In addition, the department’s review also means other changes for the Northbank in the area.
It’s ordered the portion of Coastline Drive between Market and Newnan streets in front of the Hyatt Regency Jacksonville Riverfront to become a one-way westward street. The speed limit also needs to be changed to 15-mph and will continue to have a three-ton weight limit, the transportation department said.
Those changes will be done by the city’s Public Works Department by next week and the department will inspect that portion every six months. That can be reversed when the bridge under that portion of Coastline Drive is replaced or remediated, which the city and department are pursuing.
Hand also in the email said the Hyatt is aware of the issues and continues to work with the city and department for solutions.
