Children wasted no time Thursday getting familiar with Imagination Playground, centerpiece of the new Kid Zone at Hemming Park.

The latest amenity debuted by Friends of Hemming Park offers bright blue foam blocks and other shapes that can be assembled into various configurations.

Friends is the nonprofit contracted by the city to manage and program the one-square block space near The Main Library and Museum of Contemporary Art,

Friends spokesman Keith Marks said the nonprofit wants people to know that when they come to the park, there are activities for children.

“We wanted to do something for kids, but we felt a fixed playground was premature,” he said.

Vince Cavin, executive director of the organization, described the new amenity as “the first step toward creating a robust park.” Future plans include more playground elements and exercise equipment.

“I think it’s going to be a wild success,” said Cavin.

The Kid Zone is open 10 a.m.-3 p.m. Monday-Friday.
