The second annual tires and signs buyback event begins at 8 a.m. Saturday in Lot J at EverBank Field.

Until 2 p.m., the city will pay $2 per tire for up to 10 tires and 50 cents each for up to 40 signs.

At last year’s inaugural event, more than 2,300 old tires and 6,000 illegal signs were turned in by Duval County residents.

The buyback is a partnership between the city and the City Council Special Ad Hoc Committee on Jacksonville’s Neighborhood Blight.

Any sign illegally placed on public property or attached to a tree, public utility pole or any other object on public property is eligible for payment.

Real estate signs and political candidates’ signs will be collected but do not qualify for payment, said Paul Martinez, city director of Intra-Governmental Services.

The signs and tires will be recycled.

Last year, residents collected more than $49,000 for signs and tires while helping eliminate blight and litter in their neighborhoods.

Martinez said it will be a good idea to arrive early at the event. Last year, more than 3,000 vehicles dropped off signs and tires.

“There were cars backed up all the way over the Mathews Bridge,” he said.
