A Chipotle planned in St. Augustine received a pair of permits Aug. 26, signaling project progress.
St. Johns County approved a build-out permit for 2,693 square feet at a cost of $300,000 to contractor New Creations Construction of Lake City. A $4,850 sign permit also was approved, with Longwood-based Interstate Sign and Light as the installer.
The Tex-Mex chain is planned at 4285 U.S. 1 S., Suite 1, in front of the Publix-anchored Moultrie Square shopping center south of Wildwood Drive. It replaces a Wells Fargo that closed in May 2024.
Site plans show the restaurant will have a dual drive-thru and 35 parking spaces. They also show another tenant is expected to occupy the bank’s existing drive-thru space. A $315,652 permit was issued May 6 to enclose it.
Chipotle serves burritos, tacos and bowls including vegan, vegetarian and keto options, according to its website.
Elsewhere in St. Johns County, a Chipotle opened in June in the planned Beachwalk community. The $1.2 million, 2,500-square-foot restaurant along Beachwalk Shore Drive includes a drive-thru and parking. It is part of a retail strip facing County Road 210, about 2 miles east of Interstate 95, north of the Publix-anchored Shoppes at Beachwalk.
Chipotle operates about 3,700 locations globally. CEO Scott Boatwright said in the company’s fourth-quarter report that the chain plans to reach 7,000 restaurants in North America and expand internationally.
