With its first Jacksonville restaurant set to open July 15, Raising Cane’s Chicken Fingers identified another potential location, this one in Mandarin, boosting its potential Northeast Florida presence to five.

The first is scheduled to open at 8308 Merchants Way in Oakleaf Station at southwest Argyle Forest Boulevard and Merchants Way in Southwest Jacksonville.

Four more are identified for Mandarin, Town Center, North Jacksonville and Regency.

The latest is shown in a JEA service available determination letter and application June 27 as a 2,868-square-foot Raising Cane’s at the site of a closed Pollo Tropical in Mandarin. The site plan filed with the application shows a 2,441-square-foot Raising Cane’s, indicating the project is still in design.

The site is south of Interstate 295 on an outparcel of the Mandarin Corners shopping center anchored by Walmart Supercenter.

Jacksonville-based Retail Strategies LLC owns the 1.05-acre site at 10989 San Jose Blvd., where the 3,425-square-foot Pollo Tropical was built in 2011.

A JEA review means a project is being explored and not that a decision has been made.

It is the third closed Pollo Tropical identified for Raising Cane’s.

Pollo Tropical closed those locations, its last three in Jacksonville, in February.

Raising Cane’s Chicken Fingers has multiple locations in the works in Jacksonville.

Kimley-Horn Jacksonville is the civil engineer for all three of those projects, which appear to involve the demolition of the Pollo Tropical buildings before construction of new restaurants.

In addition to the Mandarin site, Raising Cane’s has been considering:

•  A 2,868-square-foot, 95-seat, double-drive-thru restaurant at 4863 Gate Parkway in The Markets at Town Center where Pollo Tropical closed. JEA issued a service availability letter May 20 for a “scrape and build site plan.” There is a 3,407-square-foot restaurant building on the 0.9-acre site that was built in 2010.

• A 95-seat, double-drive-thru restaurant at 730 Skymarks Drive, a former Pollo Tropical in River City Marketplace in North Jacksonville. JEA issued a service availability letter May 28 for a 2,863-square-foot building while the site plan shows it as 2,683 square feet. The existing 3,307-square-foot restaurant was built in 2012 on 1.24 acres. While not specified as a scrape-and-build, the sketch plan shows the new restaurant is smaller than the existing building.

• JEA issued a service availability letter April 30 for a proposed 2,786-square-foot, 120-seat Raising Cane’s on 1.34 acres of the former Regency Square Mall property at 9501 Arlington Expressway that is slated for redevelopment. It would be on an outparcel at Arlington Expressway and Atlantic Boulevard.

The 29-year-old Raising Cane’s chain is based in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Its menu comprises box combos of chicken fingers, fries, coleslaw, Cane’s Sauce, Texas toast and drinks. The sandwich combo comprises three fingers on a toasted bun.
