A member of the Jacksonville Daily Record editing staff is stepping down, prompting changes in newsroom management and expansion of the news team.
Effective June 30, Assistant Editor David Crumpler will retire after 44 years as an editor and reporter in Northeast Florida.
Crumpler joined the staff of the Daily Record in 2022 after more than four decades at the Florida Times-Union, where he served as a general assignment news reporter, features writer, movie critic and copy editor.
His career highlights range from interviewing and writing stories about A-list celebrities like Harrison Ford to editing stories for presidential elections, Oscar night, the Super Bowl and hurricanes. He also wrote about Top Entrepreneurs, small businesses and more.
At the Daily Record, Crumpler assisted editors Karen Brune Mathis and Monty Zickuhr in managing newsgathering operations while also reporting on Jacksonville business news, helping produce the Daily Record print publication, posting content to the jaxdailyrecord.com website and social media platforms, generating email newsletters and more.
“David is an outstanding journalist and person and it has been a privilege to work with him for many years,” said Zickuhr, who also worked with Crumpler at the Times-Union.
“Living in Jacksonville for decades, his knowledge and skill have lifted the news coverage in our community to the benefit of all.”
Mathis worked with Crumpler at the Times-Union since he joined the daily. “David has those invaluable innate skills to make content better with his thoughtful editing and his ability to guide writers toward better stories.”
She said the Jacksonville Daily Record was fortunate that Crumpler joined the team.
With Crumpler’s departure, Associate Editor Ric Anderson will be promoted to managing editor.
Anderson, who has covered government affairs for the Daily Record since 2023, will collaborate with Zickuhr in overseeing news operations while continuing to report on public affairs at Jacksonville City Hall and independent agencies such as JEA and JaxPort.
The Daily Record is seeking a reporter to succeed Anderson in providing day-to-day coverage of local government, but he will continue to produce stories from the beat during and after the transition.
“I’m grateful to the management of the Daily Record and our parent company, the Observer Media Group, for placing me in a position where I can put my leadership skills and experience to work while still reporting on public policy issues that affect Northeast Florida’s businesses and economy,” said Anderson, who came to Florida in 2022 with more than 40 years of experience as a reporter, editor, manager and executive, most recently at the Las Vegas Sun.
“I’ll no longer be the guy you see taking notes on his laptop at every meeting, but I’ll be helping direct the Daily Record’s coverage of all the news, including government, and will regularly produce stories on what’s going on in Duval County and beyond.”
“From the Jaguars stadium deal to the recent land swap saga in LaVilla, Ric’s coverage of City Hall has been unparalleled and his leadership in his new role will continue to lift the Daily Record,” Zickuhr said.
Mathis said Anderson has honed the Jacksonville Daily Record’s focus on covering government’s intersection with business. “Ric is highly respected for his integrity and his talent, not to mention his immense productivity,” she said.
The Daily Record also is seeking a page designer for its print publication, a new position in its newsroom.

The Daily Record, founded in 1912 as the Financial News & Daily Record, covers business-related news in the five-county Northeast Florida region of Baker, Clay, Duval, Nassau and St. Johns counties.
