After 42 years of operation, St. Augustine restaurant Gypsy Cab Co. is closing June 5.
It will make way for Purple Olive, which will relocate there from its St. Augustine location about 5 miles south.
Gypsy Cab Co. announced the closing in a social media post May 22.
The restaurant is at 828 Anastasia Blvd. about a mile north of St. Augustine Amphitheatre.
Purple Olive is at 4255 Florida A1A S.
Gypsy Cab owner Frank O’Rourke said in a May 22 news release that the property and its assets are being sold to Purple Olive.
“We’ve had an incredible run,” he said. “We are deeply grateful to the community and to everyone who made Gypsy what it was — our staff, our patrons and our friends. It feels right to end this chapter with dignity and excitement, knowing the space will continue to serve the community through Peter and Purple Olive.”
Purple Olive is a chef-owned and -operated restaurant and catering company founded by Peter Kenney in 2004. It specializes in scratch-made dishes and catering services.
“This isn’t just a move — it’s a homecoming,” Kenny said in the release. “Gypsy Cab helped shape who I am as a chef. The spirit of creativity and community that Gypsy fostered is exactly what we’ve continued at Purple Olive.”
He was chef de cuisine at Gypsy Cab from 1999 to 2004.
