In social media posts Oct. 21, former Jacksonville Bar Association Executive Director Craig Shoup announced that he will not consider returning to the organization, despite the opportunity presenting itself.

After nearly eight years with the organization, seven as its executive director, Shoup submitted his resignation to the JBA board of governors effective Oct. 10 to accept a job with the city of Jacksonville that was withdrawn.

“The past few weeks have been a lot – physically, emotionally, and mentally. On October 1st, I was admitted to the hospital for what started as a medication issue. What I thought would be a short stay turned into several days of tests, treatments, and eventually surgery after doctors discovered a separate problem with my gallbladder. It came out on October 4th, and I was released from the hospital the next day, October 5th,” Shoup wrote in the posts.

“To make things even more complicated, the City of Jacksonville revoked a job offer I had already formally accepted on [the] same day I went into the hospital. I had even attended an orientation for the City prior to this. To have all of that happen at once – the health scare, the surgery, and the unexpected change in plans – was overwhelming to say the least.”

Shoup said that since being discharged from the hospital, he is focusing on recovery and reflection.

“I’m still healing and regaining strength, and each day is a little better than the one before. I’m incredibly grateful to the doctors and nurses who cared for me, to my family and friends who never stopped checking in, and to everyone who sent prayers and words of encouragement. That support has meant everything.

“During those quiet days in the hospital and at home, I had a lot of time to think and pray. After much reflection, I’ve made the decision not to return to the Jacksonville Bar Association as Executive Director. The JBA has been a major part of my life for many years, and I’m proud of what we accomplished together – from growing programs and partnerships to strengthening the community that makes the Bar so special.

“This isn’t a decision I made lightly, but it’s one that feels right. Sometimes life forces you to slow down and reevaluate where you’re being called next. For me, that means focusing on my health, faith, and being open to what’s ahead. I don’t have all the answers yet, but I’m trusting that God does - and that He’s already preparing the next chapter,” Shoup wrote.

“To everyone who has reached out, prayed, or just checked in - thank you from the bottom of my heart. Your kindness and support have carried me through more than you know.”

Jon McGowan, JBA interim executive director, did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
