Fourth Circuit Chief Judge Lance Day is chair of a 10-member group established by the state Supreme Court to study security for judges, court staff and courthouses.

4th Circuit Chief Judge Lance Day

The Judicial Security Workgroup was formed in response to assessments that indicate an increase in threats and acts of violence against the nation’s judiciary and court staff. The work group will make recommendations to the court on threat reduction, threat detection and threat response to promote enhanced security of judges and court system staff.

The group is directed to:

• Compile information about security incidents experienced by state judges and court staff, as well as information on actions Florida courts are taking to address judicial security.

• Review options for reducing risk from the publication or other release of personally identifiable information of judges and court staff.

• Evaluate the need for statewide data collection and dissemination on threats or other security incidents, as well as additional statewide activities to support efforts to identify and detect threats.

• Identify best practices for judges and court staff to reduce and respond to threats, including their education and training needs.

• Propose revisions, as warranted, to practices or policies, rules of court, or statutes to complement the work group’s recommendations.

The group must submit a final report on its findings and recommendations no later than May 29, 2026.
