Darnell Smith, North Florida market president at Florida Blue, announced his retirement in a Feb. 3 social media post.

“Friends, I have something very important to share with you. After more than 36 years with Florida Blue, I’m excited (and a little emotional) to share that I’II be retiring this summer,” Smith said.

“Looking back, I’m incredibly proud of what we’ve accomplished together in Florida’s north region. The successes, the challenges, and the growth along the way were only possible because of the people ... colleagues who became teammates, teammates who became friends, and friendships that will last well beyond my time in this role.”

Before becoming market president for 36 counties in North Florida from Palm Coast to Pensacola in 2013, Smith was group vice president for Florida Blue’s Service Organization and Business Process Management Organization.

“Thank you for trusting me and #TeamBlue as we worked to help people and communities achieve better health every day. Florida Blue has been more than a career for me. This company has had a lasting impact on my life, my family, and the communities we serve. I’m deeply grateful for the opportunities, support, and trust l’ve been given over the years,” he wrote.

Smith said his retirement announcement does not constitute a goodbye.

“I know I’II still see many of you around, and I look forward to staying connected as I step into this next season. Thank you for the memories, the lessons, and the journey. The future is bright! I’m excited for what’s ahead.”

In 2023, Smith was named chief of staff for Jacksonville Mayor Donna Deegan.

He served as an “executive on loan” through a contract between the city and Florida Blue, with the company covering his salary and benefits.

Mike Weinstein, who is now chief administrative officer, replaced Smith in 2024.

Smith has served on the boards of Sulzbacher, Cathedral Arts Project, First Coast YMCA, LIFT JAX, JAX Chamber, JAXUSA Policy Council, United Way of Northeast Florida, A.L. Lewis Black Opportunity and Impact Fund and Blue Zones Jacksonville.
