Jacksonville University College of Law students volunteered with LISC Jacksonville and Three Rivers Legal Services Feb. 20 at an estate plan signing event.

Jacksonville residents were able to receive free legal assistance to obtain essential documents, including wills, powers of attorney, living wills, health care surrogate designations and Lady Bird deeds, a form of estate planning that allows property owners to transfer real estate directly to beneficiaries upon death while avoiding probate and retaining full control to sell or mortgage during their lifetime.

The events help prevent “heirs’ property,” which occurs when homes pass from one generation to the next without a clear title. This fragile legal circumstance disproportionally impacts low-income communities of color.
