Buc-ee’s, the Texas-based convenience store chain, has started work on its 104-pump station off Interstate 95 in St. Johns County.

Jeff Nadalo, Buc-ee’s general counsel, said construction began Nov. 1.

Buc-ee’s plans a 53,254-square-foot building, pump station and 392 parking spaces at 655 World Commerce Parkway, southwest of the Interstate 95 and International Golf Parkway interchange.

Nadalo said the store is anticipated to open in the first quarter of 2021. Store construction, assuming fair weather and good soil conditions, typically takes 13 to 14 months.

Asked if Buc-ee’s plans another store in Northeast Florida, Nadalo said the nearest location is in Daytona and the company typically locates stores at least 90 miles apart.

Buc-ee’s received commercial review approval Oct. 28 for horizontal development to accommodate the store, three fuel canopies comprising 52,948 square feet and two 120,000 gallon underground fuel tanks.

The county is reviewing building permit plans submitted by J. Raymond Construction, the general contractor. The permit application values the job cost at $24 million.

Buc-ee’s bought the 13.71-acre St. Johns County site in November 2017. Plans for improvements to International Golf Parkway and World Commerce Parkway roadway were approved Oct. 23.

England-Thims & Miller prepared the civil engineering plans for  Buc-ee’s.
