• Candice Odom of the State Library and Archives Division of the Florida Department of State recently ruled on the retention of public documents. According to a memo sent out by Managing Deputy General Counsel Steve Rohan, the destruction of “duplicates and copies and other obsolete, superseded, and valueless documents that have burdened our administrative and executive staffs with massive amounts of unnecessary records” has been addressed. Those types of documents may now be destroyed without the necessity of completing a records disposition document. Before, the document was required by law.

• City Council member Kevin Hyde is sponsoring legislation that would declare November “Family Month” across the city of Jacksonville.

• Speaking of Council, Rules Committee Chair Jay Jabour and Finance Chair Art Shad have canceled the Nov. 15 joint meeting of the two committees.

• The Jewish Community Alliance (JCA) will hold its 11th Annual Book Festival Nov. 5-17. This year’s authors and book discussions will include: Rabbi Dov Peretz Elkins, author of “The Wisdom of Judaism;” Stacey Ballis, who wrote “The Spinster Sisters;” Alana Newhouse, author of “A Living Lens;” Ashley Kahn, author of “The House that Trane Built;” and Philip Lerman, author of “Dadditude.” All programs will be held at the JCA at 8505 San Jose Blvd. For times and information, call 730-2100, ext. 221.

• Former Northeast Florida Builders Association Executive Director Arnold Tritt will be recognized with a resolution by Council. The legislation cites Tritt’s work to improve the quality of life in Jacksonville while also helping many find affordable housing. These days Tritt is an advisor to NEFBA and Council President Daniel Davis is NEFBA’s executive director.

• Last week’s 5th Annual Arlington Toyota Tom Bush Memorial Golf Tournament at Jacksonville Golf & Country Club raised over $15,000 for the Woodland Acres Boys & Girls Clubs renovation project.

• Seven-time Olympic gymnastics medalist Shannon Miller will speak at the Jacksonville and the Beaches Convention & Visitors Bureau’s annual meeting Nov. 7 at the Osborn Center. New strategies to boost tourism will be unveiled at the meeting, which will also include a report of tourism figures during the last year.
