Downtown Vision, Inc. plans to do its part to sweep Jacksonville clean.

The citywide Clean it Up Jacksonville day is scheduled for Saturday and DVI’s Downtown Ambassadors will meet in Hemming Plaza at 8 a.m. to help police the downtown area.

The organization is hoping for at least 100 volunteers to assist the Ambassadors from 8 a.m. until noon.

“We are going to specifically target cigarette butts and cleaning up the parking lots, but of course any trash along the way we will get as well,” said Lyn Briggs marketing director for DVI. “We want to remind people to wear sunscreen and comfortable shoes.”

Gloves, trash bags, snacks and drinks will be provided for the volunteers.

“We will have donuts and coffee in the morning and heavier snacks for when they get back to Hemming Plaza,” said Briggs.

DVI will have staffers stationed at Hemming Plaza between 8 a.m. and noon to greet people who want to participate.

Briggs said Clean It Up Jacksonville is a City program which encourages residents to clean up their neighborhoods. DVI decided to do it specifically in the downtown area, using the Ambassadors and volunteers.

“One of Downtown Vision’s priorities is to make Jacksonville cleaner and friendlier and this is one way to do that,” said Briggs. “We want to get as many volunteers as we can. Even City Council vice president Suzanne Jenkins is expected to help.”
