Phil’s Shoes closed Saturday on the heels of 54 years in business.

Third-generation owner Mark Lewis said he sold thousands of pairs of shoes the last three days in business.

On Saturday, 40 people were waiting when he opened the 44th and Pearl streets store at 11 a.m. A mid-afternoon visit found dozens of customers scouring racks of shoes and bags priced at $9.99.

“The emotions are starting to get into it,” Lewis said, acknowledging a few tears.

Lewis will sell the remaining inventory, estimated at 1,000 pairs, to an Atlanta buyer. The store's fixtures also are being sold.
