Local lawyers host law seminar

A panel consisting of four members of Florida’s legal community convened Thursday at the Duval County Courthouse for a criminal law seminar, which is believed to be the largest ever held locally. Judges Larry Turner and Stan Morris, Chief Judge Emerson Thompson and Miami attorney Michael Band led discussions regarding proper closing arguments in criminal cases. The seminar helps educate lawyers on what is appropriate in court. Twelve problems with eight arguments were demonstrated by volunteers to be critiqued and debated by the audience. “We’re not doing this because we think there is a problem in this circuit,” said Circuit Court Judge Mike Weatherby, who acted as moderator. “We’re here because this is a good educational opportunity to teach why these laws exist.”
