He’s the director of business development manager for Betterliving Patio Rooms by Suntastic.
WHAT’S THAT?
Made-to-order walls and windows which convert a screen porch into a room.
They also can build a room from the bottom up.
WHY HE’S THERE
“We’re building a home in Avondale and I wanted a sun room, but I couldn’t find anything I wanted. I went to their showroom (at 9776 Beach Blvd.) to see what they had. I walked out with two things: a contract for the room and a job as their development manager.
WHERE HE’S BEEN
Most recently, Spencer was in sales with a golf club manufacturer. The company folded.
HIS CAREER
“I moved here when I was 19; my dad’s business transferred him. I attended college back in (his native) Oklahoma, then came back to play on the golf minitours and try and qualify for the PGA Tour. I tried for three years and it was obvious that it wasn’t what I was going to do.”
NEXT STEP
“I got married and settled down. I worked with a website company which was sold; I moved on because I didn’t like the corporate environment. After the golf job, I was looking around and found this.”
THE PRODUCT
“This isn’t a cheap product. The walls and windows are custom fit for each home. We take measurements and it takes 6-8 weeks for the factory to build everything. Then it takes 3-6 working days to install it. Everything is
insulated and everything fits together.”
FINANCING?
100 percent, he says.
HIS GOLF GAME
Spencer is one of the area’s best players. he has regained his amateur status and last month, with partner Scott Solem of Sun Golf, won the Jacksonville Area Golf Association Two-Man by five strokes. He also finished in the top 10 among amateurs in the prestigious Gate Open.
WHERE HE PLAYS
“Around and about.” Mostly at Westland where, coincidentally, his company has a contact with Jim Watson’s home building company.
HOBBIES
Golf, and calling sports radio talk shows. His nickname on the shows is “Spence.”
