The National Endowment for the Arts presented the Jacksonville Symphony Orchestra with a $10,000 grant during a ceremony Monday at the T-U Center. The JSO is one of three Florida orchestras to receive the grant this year.

“Our orchestra is committed to not going dark,” said Pete Carpenter, chairman of the JSO.

Winners are chosen on artistic excellence and community service. According to Dana Gioia, chairman of the National Endowment for the Arts, the JSO has received the grant 18 out of the last 19 years, which is a record.

“Congress and President Bush have increased our budget so we’re able to do a better job by reaching more people with better programs,” said Gioia.
