• Twisted Martini at the Landing has set an opening date. With designs in hand, co-owner Benny Deguzman said Monday the bar will open on Dec. 8.
• A special salute to the Florida National Guard will be held Aug. 20 during the Jags preseason game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers at Alltel Stadium. The highest percentage of Guard members sent to fight in the war on terrorism comes from Florida. The salute will be followed by a ceremony the following day, from 4 to 6 p.m., at the Landing.
• The Human Services Council is hosting its monthly Brown Bag workshop Aug. 18 at noon at the JCCI office on Atlantic Boulevard. This month’s workshop deals with Jacksonville Area Legal Aid’s services and programs. JALA executive director Michael Figgins and attorney Lynn Drysdale are the speakers. • Renovations to the Charles E. Bennett Federal Building are complete and the contractor, Skanska USA Building, Inc., will turn the building over to the government during a ceremony next month.
• Good news for commuters on Atlantic Boulevard. The southbound lanes of 9-A reopened Monday after being closed for two years for construction.
• Pop star Jessica Simpson will headline the NFL kick-off concert Sept. 9 at Metro Park.
• A reminder that the Northeast Florida International Summit 2004 — “Beyond the Super Bowl: Leveraging To Make a Quantum Leap Forward Internationally for Northeast Florida — is being held Wednesday at Florida Coastal School of Law. The summit will run from 9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.
• The newest class of recruits from the Jacksonville Fire and Rescue Department will graduate Thursday. The ceremony will start at 7 p.m. with a reception to follow.
