• The next time you see State Attorney Harry Shorstein, you may have to do a double take. A longtime mustache wearer, Shorstein is now sporting the clean look. “I thought I’d just like to try something different,” he said Tuesday. “Last month seemed like as good a time as any.”

• The Jacksonville Port Authority got some help from the Navy in patrolling its four public marine terminals. The Navy recently gave Jaxport a twin-engine, 21-foot patrol boat to be used by the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office in patrols around Talleyrand, Blount Island, Dames Point and the temporary cruise ship terminal. The boat would have cost $45,000 new, which would have added to more than $3.4 million Jaxport is planning to spend to update security in 2005.
• Sheriff John Rutherford thanked Mayor John Peyton for attending this year’s Police Memorial Service. He said he couldn’t remember the last time a mayor showed up instead of a representative. “That may seem insignificant to you, but I assure you it makes an indelible impact on the officers and families of fallen officers,” said Rutherford.
• During a discussion of a road renaming bill, City Council member Art Graham mistakenly said the Council’s Transportation Committee would need to further discuss “closing” the road. Council member Pat Lockett-Felder’s responded: “I hope you aren’t talking about closing one of my roads. If you are, we’d have to go into my office and close the door.”
• Florida’s U.S. Senate candidates will be in town Friday for a forum hosted by the Jacksonville Council, Navy League of the United States. It’s scheduled for 5-7:30 p.m. at the Radisson. There’ll be a cocktail reception followed by candidate presentation and a Q&A.
• Look for Mongo’s Flat Grill to open for Sunday brunch in the next few weeks. They’ll use half the grill for hash browns, eggs and other items and there’ll be plenty of side dishes such as fresh fruit, too.
• Jackie Cornelius, principal of Douglas Anderson School of the Arts, is the speaker at Monday’s Rotary Club of Jacksonville meeting. It begins at noon at the Omni.
• Two nationally renowned storytellers, Barbara McBride Smith and Leeny Del Seamonds, will perform at the Celebration of Women event Aug. 27 at the T-U Center. The event is a fundraiser for the Women’s Center of Jacksonville. General admission tickets are $25.
