• The state’s lieutenant governor, Toni Jennings, will be here Sept. 22 for the Chamber’s quarterly Cornerstone luncheon. It’s at the Osborn Center.
• Jacksonville Community Council Inc. is looking for volunteers for its next study. It’s on how we should manage the St. Johns River and committee meetings will start in October.
• The Jacksonville Fire and Rescue Department is providing personnel and equipment to the Domestic Security Task Force for use in the state’s southern counties that bore the brunt of Charley’s highest winds. JFRD is contributing 31 personnel, three engines, three ambulances and two satellite phones - Charley left many cities without phone service.
• Mayor John Peyton will unveil his 2004 Don’t Trash Jacksonville Campaign today. The multimedia campaign is designed to create awareness about the sources of litter and help cure the problem before trash ever hits the ground. This year’s campaign features the “Singing Garbage Men,” actual City garbagemen who sing a blues riff about misplaced trash. Other spots address unsecured cargo on vehicles and cigarette butts.
• According to traditional wisdom, the squeaky wheel gets the grease, but JEDC commissioner Charles Appleby is finding out that on the JEDC, the squeaky wheel gets the work. Appleby’s frequent suggestions during the presentation of the JEDC’s new strategic plan landed him in charge of two subcommittees, seeking solutions to his questions. Commissioner Bob Rhodes commiserated. “The last time I spoke up, I ended up chairing the faults and remedies committee,” said Rhodes who volunteered to work with Appleby.
• Congratulations to Skanska USA Building, Inc. The company received a first place Eagle Award from the Associated Builders and Contractors for its work on renovating the Charles E. Bennett Federal Building.
• The Suns return home Saturday for the final homestand of the season, which kicks off with an appearance by the San Diego Chicken.
• The Players Championship’s annual charity awards luncheon is scheduled for Nov. 1 at the Adam’s Mark Hotel.
• Friday’s Downtown Farmer’s Market was canceled to due severe weather conditions, but one longtime vendor showed up anyway. Florist Ed Jenkins managed to sell a few arrangements to his City Hall regulars before packing up mid-morning.
