Is it a rock or is it Memorex? In this case a little of both. As part of the Hemming Plaza improvements, a new sound system, complete with speakers that resemble rocks, is being installed. The speakers can be hooked-up to a radio or a five-disc CD player.

• A kick-off reception for the inaugural Black on Black film series will be held from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at the Jacksonville Museum of Modern Art. Light appetizers from Chives and a cash bar. A film, “Daughters of the Dust,” begins at 7 p.m. Other pivotal black films from the last 30 years will be shown every Wednesday throughout Black History Month.

• Author and educator Dr. Cornel West will be the featured speaker at the University of North Florida’s Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Scholarship Luncheon Feb. 12, from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. in the University Center’s grand ballroom. In his latest book, “The Cornel West Reader,” he discusses the growing divisions in American society and how it fosters the despair and distrust that undermine the democratic process.

• The Downtown Development Authority Review Committee will meet Wednesday at 3 p.m. in the small committee room on the 15th floor of the City Hall Annex.
