The Jacksonville Historical Society began efforts Wednesday to locate as many vintage photographs of Northeast Florida as possible. The group said once they find what they’re looking for, they’ll publish the photos in a large coffee table book.
“This is a very exciting project,” said Wayne Wood, the book’s author. “We’re looking to chronicle the history of the area by using some truly amazing photographs.”
Wood said the theme of the 350-page book is “big.”
“Absolutely,” he said. “We’re hoping to take the photos that we receive and restore and enlarge them.”
Wood added the photos do not have to be in mint condition and the original size is not a concern.
“We’ll shrink or enlarge them and when the book is published later this year, you should be able to see the pupils of the photo subject’s eyes,” he said.
Scheduled for publication in November 2004, the deadline to submit photos is Aug. 15. Wood said they and can either be donated or loaned.
“It really doesn’t matter,” said Historical Society executive director Emily Lisska. “We already have plenty of photos to fill a book. The real goal is to find other unique and valuable photos that others need to see.”
