After more than two years in business, the lights will go out in The Downtown Emporium in Independent Square for the last time today. Store owner Yvonne Kirby is retiring.

A Raleigh, N.C. native, Kirby moved to Jacksonville 13 years ago with her husband, a banking executive.

For years, she managed The Snob, a San Marco consignment shop, before deciding she wanted to go into business for herself.

“Working at The Snob was wonderful. It wasn’t even like I was at work while I was there,” she said. “But I kept thinking I wanted to open my own gift shop.

“That’s basically how we came into business here and it’s been non-stop ever since.”

“Our lease was expiring and it just seemed like that right time,” she said. “But I have to say that I’m ready for some time off, maybe a nice vacation because it’s been a long, long time since I’ve been able to take one.”

Kirby said she loves being in business downtown, but it has taken it toll.

“It really does take a lot out you,” she said. “You can’t believe how busy we get sometimes, but our customers are so loyal. That’s been one of the best parts of this entire experience. I’ve loved that.”

Kirby said she’s also enjoyed watching the city change right before her eyes.

“When we opened, all of the developments were just starting,” she said. “Now you can look around see so much more all the time. I look forward to seeing more.”

So what is she going to do Monday morning?

“That’s a good question,” said Kirby. “I imagine I’ll figure it out now that I have the time.”
