• Legislation to add a $15 court fee to traffic infractions has been filed by City Council member Suzanne Jenkins. Under discussion for some time, the money collected will be used to help fund and maintain the new Duval County Courthouse. The Council will review the bill next month.

• Mayor John Peyton will address the Jacksonville Bar Association during its monthly meeting Wednesday at the Omni. The luncheon starts at noon. Word is the mayor will talk about the Super Bowl.

• Downtown Vision, Inc. is scheduled to host its annual meeting Wednesday at the Seminole Club. The meeting begins at 5:30 p.m. followed by a reception at from 6:15-7:30 p.m.

• JaxWIZ, a non-profit organization that has partnered with the City and the Chamber of Commerce to develop wireless Internet zones in urban neighborhoods, has been awarded a $100,000 grant from 3Com to expand the program. 3Com runs the Urban Challenge Program, which has given out $5.1 million in grants to 40 U.S. Cities.

• Newspaper columnist and television personality Cal Thomas is the scheduled speaker at the First Coast Women’s Services banquet Oct. 28 at the Adam’s Mark Hotel. The banquet is free, but reservations are required. Call 262-6300 for details.

• Retired Florida Supreme Court Justice Major Harding is the scheduled speaker Oct. 19 at the monthly meeting of the Jacksonville Chapter of the Federal Bar Association. His speech is titled “The Independent Judiciary.” New officers for the chapter will also be sworn in during the meeting, which starts at noon at the Omni.

• St. John’s Cathedral will host its Feast of St. Francis and the Blessing of the Animals Sunday at 5 p.m. All animals are welcome, but they must be on a leash or in a carrier.

• We had the wrong phone number for the Cathedral School and Early Learning Center in a recent story. The correct number is 353-4050.

• Some Atlantic Boulevard restaurant news: the Woody’s in the Harbour Place shopping center has closed and the Whataburger in Neptune Beach is now open.
