Toni Jennings rarely has very much free time on her hands, but she did manage to squeeze The Daily Record in for quick a look around her office last week. The state’s lieutenant governor is modest when describing her surprisingly quaint surroundings saying, “I like to feel comfortable when I’m working.”
Located on the Plaza level of the Capitol in Tallahassee, Jennings’ office is inviting, well lit and, unlike many other power players’ workspaces, remains completely free of clutter.
“Oh I get lots of free stuff doing this job,” Jennings said. “We call it ‘road loot’ because that’s essentially what it is. You go out and speak at an event or attend a function and you come back with something. It’s too bad plaques have little to no resale value.”
They don’t, though every year Jennings and others at the Capitol auction off “road loot” to raise money for charity.
“But I do keep certain mementos,” she said, “because they do hold a special place for me, whether because of the giver or because a memory they evoke. The things you see here tell a lot about what’s really important to me.”
