The Northeast Florida Builders Association Builders Care’s television show for December is going to be a Christmas special. By renovating the Dix family home this month, Builders Care can welcome heart-transplant patient Allison Dix home for the holidays.

Allison received a heart transplant at Shands Hospital in Gainesville, but a problem developed with her living conditions at home. The leaking roof of her Jacksonville home caused the growth of mold, creating an unhealthy environment.

Social workers from Shands, where Allison received treatment, brought the situation to the attention of Builders Care. Travis Dix, Allison’s father, works for the Duval County School Board and her mother Joy is Allison’s caregiver.

Partnering with North Florida Builders, a Woodside Company, NEFBA Builders Care put the Dix home in the high-priority category so Allison could be home to enjoy the holidays with her family.

Howard White and Glenn Layton of Woodside developed a construction plan and turned the interior design work over to their designers Tammy Wathen and Leigh Zupan. Scores of volunteers, including military personnel from NAS Jacksonville, trade partners and hospitality donors participated the project.
