Saul Lucio has been lurking in the corridors of the Florida Theatre since 1983. He isn’t the Phantom of the Opera or anything, but he has just as much access as the masked character.

His office is the stage, and all the components that go along with it are his responsibility. He’s seen almost every act to come through the theater for the last 20 years. He’s been working full-time for the theater since 1989 and is now the technical director.

“I set up all the technical needs for every show that comes to town,” said Lucio. “I do everything from arranging lights to providing whatever the acts want for dinner.”

Lucio never had great whimsical dreams of working in a theater — he didn’t do it in high school like many of his colleagues. Instead, it was the need of a friend that got him into the business.

“A friend needed some help and I got interested. I just stayed,” he said. “It was a good fit.”

Lucio was born and raised in Arizona. He moved to Florida in 1977. He has been married to his wife Julie for more than 20 years. and their daughter Rebecca is 17.
