• Lots of land clearing down at the trolley lot for the new parking garage on the north side of the arena. As of Wednesday morning, only three of about a dozen big oak trees were still standing.

• JTA is celebrating 50 years of existence this year and its board of directors have declared Aug. 19 “Free Ride Day.” All JTA regular buses, the Skyway and Connexion van service will be free for 24 hours. The downtown trolley service is already free.

• Mayor John Peyton’s Book Club is set to mark its one-year anniversary and they’ll do it with a big bash in Hemming Plaza on June 18 from 9 a.m. until noon. It’s “Book Club Graduation Celebration” and all the kids will be moving on to kindergarten this fall.

• Leadership Jacksonville is holding its annual reunion luncheon next Thursday at the Radisson Riverwalk. The Tillie Fowler Distinguished Leadership Award will be presented to Fred Schultz and Lynn Pappas will be recognized as an honorary member.

• The City’s Noise Pollution Control Section of the Environmental Quality Division of the Environmental Protection Board is after funding for two new employees to the tune of almost $126,000. The department currently has two employees that, EPB Chairman Todd Sack, handled 1,736 complaints in fiscal years 2002-04.

• The City has a long-standing goal of bringing 10,000 residential units downtown — there are about 4,000 right now that are built, planned or under construction. But that goal might be a little farsighted, according to real estate analyst Paul Lambert. Lambert sees demand for only about 4,000 units downtown by 2010, and said the City should focus on making sure those units offer a range of prices and that some rentals are available. About three-quarters of those planned units are going to be up for sale.

• The City-owned Cecil Field golf course has a new manager today. Mike Pullen, who operates St. Augustine Shores, was awarded a 10-year contract by the City to take over from a downstate operator who didn’t meet city standards.

• ImprovJacksonville Comedy Theatre, the city’s only professional improvisational comedy troupe, is hosting a two-part Laugh & Learn Lunch on Wednesday, June 22 and Wednesday, July 13. The topic of the series is “How to Succeed in Business by Demonstrating Exceptional Creativity.”
