• The Jacksonville Urban League is holding its annual meeting next Thursday at the Ritz Theatre and LaVilla Museum. Things get underway at 6 p.m. They will also honor their outgoing board members and Nassau County Judge Brian Davis will install the Urban League’s new board officers and members.
• Big gathering at City Hall next Friday that may interest anyone associated with construction. Anthony Zebouni, chief of the Construction Law and Procurement Division of the Office of General Counsel, is hosting a town hall meeting at 1 p.m. in Council chambers to address any concerns those in construction industry have regarding doing business with the City. Director of Public Works Alan Mosley will also be on hand.
• Apologies to Times-Union editor Pat Yack. In our “Workspaces” last week we said he once wrote for the New York Times and the Atlanta Constitution. Yack was a stringer for the Times early in his career and an editor at the Constitution.
• The Jacksonville Maritime Museum Society will celebrate its 20th anniversary with a bash on July 28.
• Dr. Gwen Chandler, a City Council member from 1995-03, is retiring from FCCJ where she was head of the school’s library system.
• Ken and Ginger Underwood are hosting a big fundraiser for gubernatorial candidate Charlie Christ Monday evening at their Ponte Vedra home. It’s $500 per couple or corporation and it’s invite only.
• There’s a big karate tournament Saturday at Mandarin High and the City, the Duval County School System and Coggin Automotive serve as co-sponsors. The Jacksonville Housing Authority hosts the tournament and JHA President Ronnie Ferguson expects 600-800 competitors.
• There’s a new anchor at TV 12. Victor Blackwell will join co-anchor Charlene Shirk and meteorologist Julie Watkins on the station’s weekend morning shows. Blackwell was most recently with WHAG in Hagerstown, Md.
• JCCI Forward is having its fifth annual social on June 28 at The Grape at St. Johns Town Center to celebrate the organization’s fifth birthday. It’s from 5:30-7 p.m. and it’s invite only.
• The Commodore’s League received an award from the Atlantic Coast Conference for helping with hospitality during the ACC baseball tournament. The Commodore’s League is a group of citizens who volunteer their time and— more importantly — their boats to show guests a river view of the city. It was the largest ever with ten commodores and their boats taking about 250 out for a cruise.
• For the birds? No, but Bryan Peacock has opened an environmental consulting firm called Peacock Consulting Group and it’s in the Cardinal Point Business Park.
