• Jake Schickel of the Coker Myers firm has been elected to the Florida Bar board of governors. He defeated sole practitioner Arthur Hernandez in the voting among area attorneys.
• The historic railroad ties that were discovered underneath Hendricks Avenue last week? For the time being they will be stored at the South Jacksonville City Hall in San Marco. After work to overhaul Hendricks Avenue is completed, the San Marco Preservation Society says they want them.
• It’s official: the City Council approved legislation Tuesday evening that will allow the City to purchase the Edward Ball Building near Hemming Plaza. Employees in the City Hall Annex could be relocated there sometime next year.
• You may have noticed that the big flat-screen TV in City Hall that provides visitors with information isn’t working these days. In fact, it hasn’t worked in about eight months. Apparently, this is the second screen and at $7,500 each, it’s an expensive TV to not be working.
• The Chamber is having its “Power of Partnership” Thursday at Alltel Stadium in the Terrace Suite. It’s from 11:30 a.m. until 1:30 p.m. with lunch provided by Comcast, the event’s sponsor.
• Maybe this is a basketball town, after all. Tickets for next March’s NCAA basketball tournament game shere went on sale at 10 a.m. Thursday and there were still long lines in mid-afternoon. No count was available.
• Capt. Charles King, commanding officer at Naval Air Station Mayport, said the service members under his command have been extremely grateful to the City for its property tax refund program. King said he’s never seen a similar program, which refunds the taxes up to $2,000 for military members who drew combat pay in 2004. King said he’d like to see the program continued next year, with smaller refunds if necessary. But if the City can’t afford the program next year, King said he’s grateful for the money already spent.
• The new Jacksonville Luxury Living magazine is out and, yes, that’s a smiling David Duval on the cover. Why? Dunno ... he doesn’t live here anymore.
