• Jacksonville Area Legal Aid executive director Michael Figgins was milling around city hall Friday afternoon. He was talking with officials about fixing a pending funding cut that might be imposed by the City. Since July 2004, several legal programs including JALA have been receiving money allocated from a $65 additional assessment court cost attached to criminal cases. Three weeks ago, the programs’ directors found out from the City that the source for the budgeted money hasn’t panned out due to insufficient fee collections. Figgins said a fix hasn’t been found yet but talks are still underway.
• The Rose Agency was doing a bit of spring cleaning last week. The clothier had a $25 sale rack on the sidewalk filled with shirts and ties that apparently hadn’t been selling very well.
• Several officers from the New York Police Department were in town this weekend but they weren’t looking for the bad guys. They were looking for a few good men and women. Recruiting officers were at UNF Saturday offering NYPD application exams as part of the department’s twice-per-year hiring campaign.
• Attorney Tom Edwards saw our story on Howard Coker’s hunting and wanted to add a clarification. Edwards has accompanied the Coker Myers partner on many of his globe-trotting hunting expeditions. “Did Howard tell you that for every one of those stuffed animals he has in his house, that I’ve got one at home that’s bigger?” said Edwards.
• Memories came flashing back to Spohrer Wilner partner Bob Spohrer and wife Helen when photographer Don Morris snapped a photo of the couple at last week’s Florida Children First awards ceremony. Morris took pictures at the Spohrers’ wedding 25 years ago.
• Understand that Jaguars’ Coach Jack Del Rio has sold his Ortega home. $4.5 million, we hear.
• The celebrity auction at the St. Vincent’s golf tournament Friday brought in $100,000, including $37,500 to play with comedian Bill Murray.
