• The Florida Theatre continues renovating and upgrading and now the crew has replaced the ropes that change the scenery. Apparently, they hadn’t been replaced since 1983. Next: the theatre will get a new curtain in about two weeks.

• The October date for the “new” Hendricks Avenue appears to be too hopeful. They now say it’s going to be early next year before the streetwork is finished.
• Where did it all go? If you had to clean out your carry-on before you got on your flight at the airport and you’re wondering what’s going to happen to the left-behind liquids, it’s all going to the dump. “It’s being trashed,” said Michael Stewart, director of external affairs at Jacksonville International Airport. Stewart added that someone kidded him about the contraband, predicting, “If I hear about a big party at the JIA, I’ll know where the liquor came from.”
• It might be a while before city buses start smelling like French fries: The JTA is still exploring the possibility of using bio-diesel fuel in its fleet of buses. Director of External Affairs Mike Miller said that the Jacksonville Transportation Authority is considering using a mixture of 85 percent fossil fuel and 15 percent soy-based fuel, but price is an issue since the combination is more expensive than pure fossil fuel.
• Jaguars’ second round draft pick Maurice Jones-Drew is also a poet. Jones-Drew said it was rookie free agent Trestin George who inspired him to start writing again. Jones-Drew said he started in high school and even won some awards for his work.
• Jacksonville University has named seven new trustees: Y.E. “Chipper” Hall of Rex Corporation, David Hodges Jr. of the Scott-McRae Group, Bruce Kern of First Coast Sales, Raymond Mason Jr. of CenterBank, Andrew Moran of Lady Lake, president of FAM Holdings; Sandy Semanik of SEDA Construction, and Terry Wilcox of Aon Risk Services.
• U.S. Rep. Ander Crenshaw is looking for old soldiers to participate in a Nov. 2 ceremony. To be eligible for the “World War II Veterans Recognition Ceremony,” you have to have served in the war between Dec. 7, 1941 and Dec. 31, 1946 and live in Crenshaw’s district.
