Construction is underway on a 12,000-square-foot day care learning center at 210 Commerce Lake Dr. in Saint Johns Place at World Golf Village. Designed with an academic atmosphere, Roots and Wings Learning Center will offer daycare services to children from six weeks to five years old.
Owner Lucy Materia, an experienced educator with 40 years in both public and private school systems in California and the Philippines, has a bachelor’s degree in elementary education with dual majors in kindergarten education and humanities and a master’s degree in school counseling.
Her son, Emmanuel Materia, who will be assisting with the learning center, has taught kindergarten and first grade for four years in California and has a bachelor’s degree in psychology and a master’s degree in the education of cross-cultural teaching.
Slated for an August opening, Roots and Wings is expected to employ about 20 teachers in addition to assistants and office managers. Hours of operation are tentatively scheduled from 6:30 a.m.- 6:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. The learning center plans to file for accreditation after the required six-month waiting period.
