• Several Downtown businesses were vandalized during the July 4 holiday. Casa Dora owner Sam Hamidi arrived at work Wednesday morning to find a bullet hole in his front window. Hamidi had recently installed a security camera and said he’d look for the culprit on tape. He put in the security system after enduring more than 10 break-ins over the last five years.
• Vestcor figured out something to do with the vacant ground-floor retail space at its 11 E. Forsyth apartment building. The developer is using one of the windows to advertise its Stoney Creek Cottages, a Nassau County development.
• The Jacksonville Fire and Rescue Department will hold a graduation ceremony next Thursday at 7 p.m. at the Fire and Rescue Training Academy. Recruit Class 1-06 will be honored.
• City Council President Michael Corrigan is the guest speaker at Friday’s Chamber Downtown Council meeting. It’s at 7:30 at River City Brewing Co.
• Did you know, according to Florida Trend magazine, the average age of attorneys in Florida is 51 and they average 25 years in practice?
• Speaking of the meeting, the Board of Governors had a little fun at Coxe’s expense. Under the direction of immediate-past Bar President Alan Bookman, the Board wore traditional Coxe garb: khakis, white shirt, blue blazer. All got the memo except one. She wore a pink dress.
• One more from the meeting. In addition to becoming president of the Bar, Coxe was given a present. Mike Kamenski, an attorney from Philadelphia, gave Coxe a $199.50 gift certificate to a premier men’s store in Philly. “Some on the Board of Governors thought this would cover six suits,” said Kamenski.
• Little-known facts. Florida Bar President-elect Frank Angones is the first Cuban-born president-elect and his great-great-grandfather wrote the Cuban national anthem.
• Tonca the turtle is turning 40, and the Museum of Science & History celebrates on Saturday. From 10 a.m.-2 p.m., guests can make him a birthday card and eat cake. A reptile exhibition will be on display, too.
• The remodeling of Bukkets in Jacksonville Beach is completed. No more raw bar.
