The last few months have been very exciting ones for the Women’s Council of REALTORS. Our President, Bonnie Siecker has been instrumental in attracting very knowledgeable speakers to the monthly WCR meetings. In May we had Mike Saylor, Planning Commission of Jacksonville. Mr. Saylor spoke about the challenges that the City of Jacksonville faces as it continues to develop in all its counties. The planning Commission attempts to maintain a balance between the what major developers wish to do and what the existing infrastructure can handle. Mr. Saylor indicated that the Planning Commission has been ‘encouraging’ developers to allow for ‘affordable’ housing in their future plans. No doubt this issue will continue to be debated in the years to come.
In June our guest speakers were Kurt Jones, and Mike Boymer from the JSO and Anorine Ledet from US Immigration and Customs Enforcement.The program centered around their encounters over the internet with predators that target youths and as a result either lure them away from home, engage in on line sex or expose themselves to them or in some cases just mentally abuse the children. It was very clear that we are fortunate to have a team working in Duval County but they are very limited and need more help. The key is awareness on the part of parents and education on how to protect kids. They warned that chat rooms are but the starting point. Instant messaging is used quite often and very popular among kids. It is imperative that kids do not give any private information over the internet to anyone, not even their friends. There are programs for the parents to buy so they can track what the kids are doing on the computers and very reasonably priced. We had many interested parents in the audience that were both surprised and angry that there is not more being done to protect our children. The officers were great at getting the word out but I think we as REALTORS need to help them by spreading the word to our cutomers and kids.
