With the holidays fast approaching, the Salvation Army has its hands full.
The non-profit organization that serves thousands of homeless people each year is attempting to reach even more impoverished families this holiday season through efforts like the Angel Tree program and the Red Kettle Drive. With a shortage of volunteers, however, area coordinator for the organization, Maj. Jim Arrowood, says that any little bit of help from Jacksonville residents will make a difference and lighten the group’s already heavy load.
“There are lots of ways that people can help,” said Arrowood. “People think that just because they can’t dish out meals or donate presents, they won’t be of help and that’s just not true.”
Arrowood and his wife Linda relocated from Baltimore in July to replace Majs. James and Karol Seiler as the area commanders of the Northeast Florida Salvation Army. The couple said there are many volunteer opportunities like assisting with the organization’s seniors program, helping to sort and distribute food in the pantry and food bank locations or manning area shelters.
And don’t forget those familiar bell ringers who, according to the organization, are always in demand.
“We never have enough,” said Melanie Love, spokesperson for the Salvation Army. “It is one of the most fun volunteer opportunities we offer and it really puts you in the Christmas spirit. Plus, a couple people can do it together as a team.”
Interested individuals can also help by wrapping presents or helping to set up the toy shop locations where the workers will distribute thousands of bags of clothing to parents and children that are being served through the Angel Tree program.
“This program is really important. It aims to ensure that every child is treated equally,” said Arrowood. “We want every child out there to wake up and know that they’ll have a gift.”
The setup dates for the toy shop begin in mid-December and go on through the distribution the week before Christmas and Christmas eve weekend. Gift distribution days will be Dec. 18-21. On those days, some volunteers will be distributing toys while others will work behind the scenes filling and organizing orders. On Dec. 22, volunteers are needed to help clean up and clear out the toy shop facility that will be used. For more information on how to lend a hand, visit www.salvationarmyjax.org or call 301-4875.
