• In addition to Saturday’s game, there’s another competition this week between the two schools and Florida and Georgia fans may want to pay close attention to the results. The Hulsey-Kimbrell Moot Court Competition was established in 1982 and Georgia currently holds a 16-6 lead with two ties. The competition is Friday morning in the Federal Courthouse and over the years the school that wins the moot court competition doesn’t fare well in the football game. In fact, in the 22 competitions that haven’t ended in a tie, the school that won the moot court competition lost in football 17 times.
• Three Downtown streets – Laura, Hogan and Water – will be closed for the Georgia-Florida game this weekend. Laura will be closed from Bay Street to Independent Drive, but there will be access to the Independent Square garage. Hogan will be closed from Bay Street to the river. Water will be closed from Laura to Pearl, but Times-Union Center and Omni traffic will be allowed.
• Winn-Dixie and Milk Bone have donated $5,000 to the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office K-9 unit to be used towards the purchase of a new police dog. The JSO currently has 20 active police dogs working patrol duty in the areas of apprehensions, area searches, tracking, article searches, explosives detection or narcotics detection.
• Chef Liz Grenamyer has opened “Bella Sera,” a 10,000 square-foot Italian farmhouse-themed catering facility near the corner of Park and King Streets in Riverside. There is an open-air courtyard for up to 20 people and a main dining room that will accommodate up to 200 with a full-service bar.
• The Jacksonville Aviation Authority’s Cecil Field has won the Florida General Aviation Airport of the Year Award from the Florida Airports Council and the Florida Department of Transportation. There are 112 public-use general aviation airports statewide.
• The Hyatt is going to great lengths to assure there are no problems over the Georgia-Florida weekend. Its four-to-a-room policy will be strictly enforced and no one without a wristband will be allowed past the second floor. Police on the elevators will make sure of that, according to the Hyatt’s Lindsey Waldrop.
• Clarification. City Council member Ronnie Fussell has declined an appointment to the Keep Jacksonville Beautiful: A Clean City Commission due to an already busy schedule.
