• Last chance Monday to bet on dogs Downtown. The Jacksonville Kennel Club will close that night and the puppies will head to Orange Park for eight months before returning.

• The Jacksonville Museum of Modern Art had to cancel their “Sabroso” event scheduled for Sept. 30. The museum hopes to hold the event next year.

• The 2006 Jacksonville Suns season ranked second in attendance. This season the Suns drew 404,992 fans to the Baseball Grounds in 69 home games. The 2004 season is still first with 420,495 fans.

• What’s the weirdest stuff to turn up in local rivers? A huge, dead pig and a porta-potty, according to the city’s Clean It Up, Green It Up division. They’ve found the most frequent items in the water – besides average trash – are tires.

• Downtown Vision, Inc. is looking for a new promotions director to be responsible for the first Wednesday Art Walk and the Hemming Plaza Farmers’ Market. Candidates must be detail-oriented self-starters and have a minimum five years event planning experience, according to marketing director Angela Mack. She said resumes can be e-mailed to [email protected] or faxed to 634-8988; no phone calls.

• The annual St. Johns River Celebration in March is the largest community cleanup in Jacksonville. Since 2000, 5,575 volunteers have contributed 19,205 hours to the event and collected about 217,460 pounds of marine litter.

• Sure, you can eat a watermelon, but how far can you chuck it? Find out at the The Rodeheaver Boys Ranch 2nd annual Melon Blast Monday from 9 a.m.-5 p.m. at Rodeheaver Boys’ Ranch. More info online at www.rbr.org.

• The Jaguars’ 2006 season kickoff pep rally will take place Saturday from noon-2 p.m. at the Jacksonville Zoo and gardens’ special events field. The rally is included with the price of zoo admission. Guests include Jaguars radio announcer Brian Sexton, members of the Roar, Jaxson de Ville and several players. Autographs and prizes will be available.
