• The sandwich shop on East Adams Street between Ocean and Newnan has changed hands again. New owner Denise Daly said that she will open “Caribbean Sun Splash Restaurant” in October after she installs a new floor and ceiling and puts a fresh coat of paint on the walls. Daly also said that she will be open until 6 p.m. each day.

• AmSouth City President Marty Lanahan, Dalton Agency Vice President Michael Munz and Tocqueville members are hosting an invitation only a “Martinis and More” event at Lanahan’s house to benefit the United Way.

• The renovation project at Chamblin Bookmine Downtown is about to get underway again. Ron Chamblin said he expects that the final plans and drawings will be approved in the next two weeks. Construction of the book store and coffee shop on Laura Street across from Snyder Memorial will resume as soon as the City signs off on the design.

• Brewster Durkee is still driving at 94 years old. In fact, last week his son, Ken, took Brewster to renew his license. It’s for another six years.

• The combined Rotary Club of Jacksonville-Meninak Club golf tournament is Oct. 16 at NAS. No luncheon meeting that day, but everyone who shows up at the tourney will get lunch.

• Mayor John Peyton has been asked by The Jacksonville Bar Association to be the guest speaker at a future lucheon.

• Jaguars cornerback Rashean Mathis may be getting his first taste of local politics. Mathis is up for appointment to the City’s Parks, Recreation, Entertainment and Conservation Advisory Board. It’s an at-large appointment that will expire June 30 of next year. Attorney Howard Coker is also up for appointment to the same board.

• Speaking of appointments, former Peyton transition team member Ashton Hudson is up for a spot on the JEA’s board of directors. Hudson would replace Fidelity National Financial Chairman and CEO Bill Foley.

• The Rotary Gingerbread Extravaganza for 2006 will be held at the Avenues Mall in front of Dillards and the official preview party for Rotarians is Nov. 21 with the show opening to the public on Nov. 22. This year, the show will run until Jan. 5.

• The TV-47 Dream Home by Watson Custom Home Builders is open for viewing at LandMar’s Fernandina Beach community of North Hampton. The Dream Home will be open Thursdays through Saturdays from 10 a.m.-6 p.m. and Sundays from noon-6 p.m. through Sept. 24. Proceeds from the Dream Home will benefit the Monique Burr Foundation for Children.
