A who’s who of Jacksonville politicians, judges, business professionals and other dignitaries gathered in Southside Wednesday for the Fraternal Order of Police luncheon.

The day began with Firehouse Subs owners Chris and Robin Sorensen being named as honorary members of the FOP. Then the crowd of more than 200 enjoyed fried shrimp and fish while meeting and greeting in a congregation that many said is rare these days.

“This is just a nice chance to get to visit with people you don’t always see,” said Circuit Judge Gregg McCaulie, one of at least a half-dozen judges in attendance. “And the food’s good too.”

FOP President Nelson Cuba said he was proud so many people showed up to support his organization.

“This is a real cross-section of the community,” he said, “and anytime they get to come together and not be in an atmosphere where they have to maybe argue or have to talk business is good.”

Although the mood was light, there was still business going on. The lawn in front of the FOP meeting hall on Beach Boulevard was lined with campaign signs for state house of representatives District 14 candidate Charles McBurney, who was inside touting his FOP endorsement.

“I’ve been honored to receive their endorsement and I’m proud to show it by being here,” said McBurney, who will be facing Lad Daniels in the primary for the Republican candidacy on Aug. 28. The winner will face Democratic candidate Debra Jahns-Nelson on Sept. 18.

While politics was in the air, some officials were just happy to see friends and colleagues and enjoy some good food.

“This is a great fellowship and an opportunity to meet leaders and people with business influence,” said Jacksonville Tax Collector Mike Hogan. “It’s very rare you get to speak with a judge, especially at a social gathering.”

Cuba said the next FOP luncheon will take place in October and the menu will likely stay true to the southern specialties they do best.
