• This weekend marks the end of the Museum of Science & History’s last Cosmic Concerts for the summer. The concerts are both Friday and Saturday night with Pink Floyd: “Wish You Were Here” at 8 p.m., Pink Floyd: “Dark Side of the Moon” at 9 p.m. and Pink Floyd: “The Wall” at 10:30 p.m. All concerts are $7 except for “The Wall” which is $9.
• Richard Danford, Jr., president of the Jacksonville Urban League, was appointed by Governor Charlie Crist and the Department of Juvenile Justice to serve on Florida’s Blueprint Commission on Juvenile Justice Reform. One of the Commission’s goals is to recommend improvements for the juvenile justice system.
• Jacksonville Jaguars Mike Peterson and Marcus Stroud will host the first annual “Book It” Backpack Distribution Ceremony from 2-4 p.m. Sunday at the Police Athletic League’s 33rd Street location off of McDuff and Lenox avenues. Peterson and Stroud are working in partnership with the Police Athletic League to provide disadvantaged youth with school supplies. Each child will also receive an age and gender appropriate book that will be autographed by Peterson and Stroud.
• The City’s Department of Parks, Recreation, Entertainment and Conservation will host “Big Back to School Dance Jamboree” from 6-10 p.m. tonight at the Cuba Hunter Community Center, 3620 Bedford Rd. To celebrate the end of summer and the beginning of the school year JaxParks are hosting this free event for children of all ages.
• The 4th annual Beaches Making Strides Against Breast Cancer “Team Leader Kickoff Party” is Tuesday from 6-8 p.m. at the TPC Clubhouse. The event will feature a social hour from 6-7 p.m. and the program is from 7-8 p.m. The kickoff is sponsored by Mayo Clinic of Jacksonville and presented by Lifestyles Realtors. Charlene Shirk will be emceeing the event.
• City Council President Daniel Davis and other elected officials who missed the city’s first ethics training program in June will have one last chance to get up to speed on ethics at a final session from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. next Friday at City Hall. “We missed you,” stated an e-mail to Davis from City Ethics Officer Steve Rohan. “As you know, such training is required of all elected officials by ... Jacksonville Ordinance Code. Such training is required after each election even if you had no opposition.” The training is also required for executive council assistants and senior leaders in the Mayor’s office.
• The Jacksonville Zoo and Gardens is hosting its second annual family fundraiser, ZOObilee from 6:30-9:30 p.m. Aug. 25 in the Zoo’s new Great Lawn area which is part of the Zoo’s new Gardens at Trout River Plaza. The event is open to the public. Tickets are $75 for adults, $25 for children and children under 3 are free.
