• Community Connections of Jacksonville has added Jermaine Thomas to its professional program staff. Thomas brings many years of experience to the job, including four years as an assistant principal at School of Success Academy. Thomas will oversee after-school programs at the Courtney Manor and Lindsey Terrace locations.

• The Salvation Army of Northeast Florida received a new mobile canteen last week. The mobile canteen used as a feeding and community outreach vehicle is one of three new units in the state. The three canteens are the largest in the U.S. and were strategically placed in Jacksonville, Ft. Myers and Pensacola — covering all three coasts.

• Attorney Hugh Cotney has been appointed to membership of the Legal Accessibility System Task Force of the Florida Coordinating Council for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing by Sharon Caserta, chairperson of the task force.

• The tag line for this year’s Sea and Sky Spectacular is “Not Your Typical Day at the Beach.” The event is set for Nov. 2-4.

• October is a big month for the University of North Florida as the school will celebrate its 35th anniversary. President and former Mayor John Delaney has created a series of events called “Founders Month” to mark the anniversary.

• Attorney Bill Brinton will be recognized Sept. 25 as the first recipient of The Community Foundation’s “Prize for Civic Engagement” which “recognizes and encourages citizens in Northeast Florida who speak out courageously for the common good on matters of civic importance.” The ceremony is part of the Foundation’s annual meeting at the Main Library.
